Qatar Cyclists, Sandstormers back Gaza school project

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Qatar Cyclists and Qatar Sandstormers are taking part in a seven-day Global Biking Initiative to raise money for charity.

Participation in the ride is part of raising awareness about 'Cyclists for Education' initiative signed between Qatar Charity (QC), Qatar Cyclists and Qatar Sandstormers to raise QR5m to rebuild a girls' school for about 1,000 students in Gaza.

Starting on Sunday in the Italian city of Venice and ending in Stuttgart, Germany, cyclists will ride 800km through four European countries - Italy, Austria, Switzerland and Germany, gaining 7,000m in elevation as they pass through the Alps.

Qatar Cyclists and Qatar Sandstormers have raised money by approaching sponsors, which this year include Tasweeq, Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, Vodafone, Qatar Airways, Qatar Gas, Amwaj, Qatar Financial Centre, Al Ruwais, and Aspire Zone Foundation.

The initiative is also supported by Sora Marine and Damen Shipyards Group.

Cyclists will represent QC and sponsors and will give a presentation on the importance of the educational project and the need to support humanitarian work in general, encouraging those interested in sport to participate in charitable work. This year, over 400 cyclists from about 22 countries are participating.

To date, cyclists have raised more than QR500,000. The initiative will be supported by cyclists over the next three years during which money collected will support construction of the project.

Participating riders voluntarily serve charitable projects of their choice through corporate sponsorship that is converted into financial support for charitable projects.

"The event is commendable and the custodians deserve to be seen as role models for spending time and effort on humanitarian work, which is today often hampered by barriers such as natural disasters and armed conflicts, and ignorance and poverty, requiring support of those with big hearts," said Abdulnaser Alzaher Alyafei, Executive director, Local Development, QC.

"We have been extending humanitarian support and are proud of the project and of relations that bring us together today with Qatar Cyclists and Qatar Sandstormers, which we hope will be expanded to establish more charitable and humanitarian projects," added Alyafei.

The agreement was signed by Nasser Mohammed Al Yafei, Executive Director, Local Development, QC, and Abdul Aziz Al Kuwari, Director-General, Qatar Centre for Bicycles, and Team Leader of Qatar Cyclists.
