Fire destroys flat in Muttrah, Oman

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) A massive fire broke out in a Muttrah flat on Tuesday afternoon gutting furniture and appliances. Occupants of the flat and other families in the building were unhurt officials said.

Fire fighting teams from the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulances (PACDA) took two hours to control the blaze.

Mohammad Zaheer who lives in the flat with his wife and two children said 'I have been living here for five years now and always thought that this was one of the safest buildings in the area.'

It is being suspected that a short circuit in the air conditioner may have caused the fire which spread across the house in a matter of minutes gutting furniture and leaving the place in a thick layer of ash. 'I am thankful that my wife and two children have escaped unharmed' said Zaheer.

He said they left the flat with some valuables and passports. 'Everything has been charred – even the clothes in the cabinet and the new sofa we bought recently.'

An ROP official present at the scene said 'It is likely that a short circuit caused the fire. There will be investigations. There have been no casualties.'

Reshmi P another resident of the building said 'The fire started at around 1pm. We were waiting for our children to return from school when we heard screams from the flat and thick black smoke.'

Eight families live in the building.
