Asian Neighbours Take Steps against MERS Virus

(MENAFN- QNA) Hong Kong, mainland China and South Korea were taking steps Wednesday to combat the spread of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS.

Ko Wing-man, Hong Kong's Secretary for Food and Health, recommended that all public health workers suspend medical exchange trips to South Korea.

Ko also warned travellers that anyone with symptoms who lies to officials may be prosecuted, after an infected 44-year-old South Korean man, who travelled to China via Hong Kong last week, denied lying to airport officials about the state of his health.

MERS is normally only transmitted with very close contact, with healthcare settings also presenting greater risk of infection.

In South Korea over 200 schools in Gyeonggi province and the greater Seoul area suspended classes to help stop the disease spreading, according to Yonhap News Agency.

Two patients have died and some 1,300 people are under quarantine in Korea. The country has confirmed 30 cases of MERS.
