Kuwait ready to aid Iraq through UN Stability Fund - FM

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Kuwait's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah on Tuesday expressed Kuwait's full readiness to aid Iraq through the proposed UN-supervised Stability Fund.

"We have expressed full readiness to aid Iraq through the Stability Fund and to offer humanitarian aid to a huge number of displaced Iraqis before the advent of the holy month of Ramadan [expected on June 18]," Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled told KUNA after participating in the second ministerial meeting for the anti-ISIL coalition.

"This comes within the framework of Kuwait's responsibility towards the stability and security of its neighbor, Iraq." He pointed out that Kuwait's speech at the meeting reiterated support to Iraqi government's approach of opening up to the region and the whole world to back the measures it takes to defeat the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled underscored the need for a national reconciliation - that includes different segments of the Iraqi society - to ensure Iraq's stability and security.

He expressed satisfaction of the outcome of today's "very important meeting".

He stated that the Iraqi Premier Haider Al-Abadi has informed the conferees about the latest developments of the situation in Iraq and the fight against ISIL.

Al-Abadi also touched upon various issues including the under-foundation Stability Fund, the return of displaced people who fled their homes in the ISIL-controlled areas, Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled said.

He added that the Commander of the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL General John Allen also briefed the conferees about the coalition's strategy in confronting ISIL.

The Kuwait top diplomat disclosed that the meeting mulled several measures to dry up the financial resources of ISIL and other extremist groups and to stop the flow of foreign fighters to ISIL-controlled areas.
