US Senate passes Freedom Act to curb mass surveillance

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Senate on Tuesday voted to pass the USA Freedom Act, which - for the first time since the week of September 11, 2001 - will end the government's bulk collection of the phone records of American citizens.

The legislation will now be sent to President Barack Obama for his signature. The White House has already expressed its backing for the bill.

Section 215 of The Patriot Act, which was highly criticized for its authorization of mass surveillance by the National Security Agency, expired at midnight local time on Friday.

But the Senate took up the debate again this week in a bid to reinstate the less-contested surveillance measures, including the tracking of lone wolf suspects and the collection of data of foreign persons abroad.
