Graduations Parties Help Spike Summer Economy

Summary: A renewed focus on celebrating graduations is helping discretionary spending reach pre-recession levels

May 14 2015 Appleton WI-As memories of the recession recede gas prices remain lower than where they were a year ago and an early summer has taken hold of most of the country people are feeling fewer restrictions on how they spend their discretionary income. With colleges currently holding graduation ceremonies high school seniors graduating next month and the growing acceptance of marking the passage from middle school to high school many families are spending that money on elaborate parties with hired performers and catered food.

“This summer we are definitely seeing a spike in the number of private families contacting us for rentals” said Wayne Nolden Chief FUN Officer and owner of a company that specializes in renting out party equipment and organizing team building activities. “People are looking to do something special and different and this year they seem to be working with larger budgets than years past.”

This is a trend that many experts expect to see across the spectrum of summer entertainment options. One of the most respected economic forecasters the annual American Automobile Association (AAA) report on summer travel is very bullish on this summer’s spending. "A strong employment market and low gas prices have driven consumer optimism to new highs and boosted Americans' disposable income" AAA President Marshall L. Doney recently said.

Nolden said that their typical summer rentals are driven by events and charities looking to host casino nights. Any summer interest that they have for their inflatable attractions designed for children usually does not begin until June and early July when summer camps prepare for end of season carnivals. This year dating back to early in the springtime they were receiving more inquiries into graduation themed parties than usual and not just for age groups typically associated with graduations.

“We have been contacted by groups of families who are jointly throwing a party for their children who are ‘graduating’ from sixth grade” Nolden said “and even privately owned pre-schools for the kids moving on to kindergarten.”

He noted that the interest was so great for some of the younger set that he has had to reach out to his suppliers for additional designed for children ten and under.
