Japan's NEDO transfers Al Ghail sewage plant to RAK Wastewater Authority

(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation, NEDO, has transferred its Hitachi-built sewage treatment plant to RAK Wastewater Authority, RAKWA.

The signing ceremony, confirming the transfer of assets, was attended by Sheikh Abdullah bin Humaid bin Abdullah Al Qasimi, Director of the RAK Ruler's Office, Ahmed Al Hammadi, Chairman of RAKWA, Essa Al Ghurair, Chairman of Hi Star Water Solutions, Hisashi Michigami, Consul-General of Japan, Kimihito Sato, NEDO's Director-General, Mohamed Osman, Hitachi Middle East's CEO, and a number of other attendees, including RAK Investment Authority's CEO, Rino Sabatino and, COO, Liam Keating.

Japan's largest public R&D organisation, NEDO promotes technology developments to improve efficiency and reduce the cost of new energy sources worldwide. The project for developing the Al Ghail plant was initiated back in 2010, aiming to provide a secure water supply while reducing the energy requirement for water treatment by at least 30%.

Situated in RAKIA's Al Ghail Industrial Park, the plant has a capacity to hold 2,000 cubic metres of sewage per day, which is then converted into water for irrigation and district cooling. RAKWA plans to maintain and encourage the use of recycled water, especially within the industrial park, in order to preserve groundwater resources.

"Currently, Al Ghail Industrial Park is approximately one third occupied with a diverse range of industrial sectors," said RAKIA's CEO, "and the water recycling plant plays a critical role in the day-to-day operations of the park."

The ceremony also included the signing of a research collaboration agreement by RAKWA, Global Water Recycling and Reuse Solution Technology Research Association of Japan and Hi Star Water Solutions. Concluding the ceremony, Mr. Al Hammadi stressed the importance of such collaborations between all parties and hailed the fruitful cooperation between the Japanese government and the government of Ras al-Khaimah.
