Serious opponents to Juventus wanted

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The next Italian Serie A league may have little thrill to offer as regards the race for the scudetto - the tri-colour badge that champions Juventus will have onto their jerseys for a fourth straight season.

The Bianconeri from Turin found little opposition in the season that ended Sunday, settling matters in early May with four games left and closing the season on 87 points, 17 clear of second-place Roma.

When action resumes in August, Roma are again to play the Champions League with Juve, while third-place Lazio hope to access the elite tournament through a play-off game.

Juve drew 2-2 Saturday at Verona, the same town where they opened the season in late August against Chievo with new coach Massimiliano Allegri taking over from Antonio Conte.

"From Verona to Verona: 38 games to retain the title," tweeted Allegri. "I cannot wait to start again, but first we have something to take care of."

Juve, who also lifted the Italian Cup by beating Lazio 2-1 in the May 20 final, are still to close their season with a prestigious Champions League final against Barcelona Saturday in Berlin, where both sides look to turn their double into a treble.
