(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Polling at the Turkish embassy in Washington and consulates across the U.S. for Turkey's general elections has come to an end with at least 17,804 Turkish citizens participating in the process.
The general election officially begins on June 7 in Turkey.
Voting for 90,745 eligible voters in the U.S. began on May 16 and concluded at polling stations set up inside Turkish missions Sunday.
A total of 2,396 citizens voted at the Washington embassy; 7,021 voted at the Turkish mission in New York, 2,182 in Los Angeles, 2,070 in Houston, 1,756 in Chicago, 1,697 in Boston and 682 in Miami.
The vote count at the U.S. customs was 2,376 on May 29; however, voting there will continue till June 7.
According to Turkey's Supreme Election Board, 112 polling stations have been set up for almost three million Turkish nationals living abroad.
Elections in Turkey have the second-highest voter turnout among developed democracies, according to a report released by the Washington-based Pew Research Center.
More than 84 percent of the electorate went to the polls in the 2011 general election, according to the report comparing turnout rates in Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development member states.
The upcoming June elections will elect 550 members of the Turkish parliament from 20 political parties. This will be the country's 25th general election.
