Sharjah Ruler opens conference on school theatre

(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, on Sunday opened a conference on the strategic development of school theatre in the Arab Region.

In opening remarks, H.H. Sheikh Sultan stressed that the noble and constructive message of theatre cannot be blocked, because it enlightens the whole society and influences all its members, children in particular.

The conference, he said, is aimed at bolstering the role of theatre in nurturing of Arab children who are facing an "obscurantist wave" that requires strong yet balanced response based on knowledge and science.

"Theatre provides a forum for expression, constructive criticism and democracy if it is invested in constructive proposals that reflect the values and traditions of society in a literary and intellectual way that preserves the Arab identity," H.H. Sheikh Sultan said.

He called for incentives for directors who take part in the development of school theatre and said, "We want to meet next year and find that all our plans will have been materialised on the ground, God willing."

Educationists, officials, theatre enthusiasts, writers and artists from the UAE and other Arab countries attended the conference at the Dr Sultan Al Qasimi Centre for Gulf Studies.
