Israel to punish stone throwers with up to 10 yrs in prison

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Israel's ministerial committee for legislation unanimously voted into law on Sunday a bill to punish those who hurl stones at police or means of transport with five years in prison.

The prison term would increase to ten years if the perpetrators were proved to have thrown stones or any other object at a car or bus with the aim of causing harm to its passengers.

A law that punishes stone throwers already exists, but it differentiates between throwing stones as a means of protest and throwing stones with the intent to harm. The new law punishes the act regardless of the perpetrator's intent.

The bill was previously put forward by the justice ministry during the previous government, under then-minister Tzipi Livni.

The committee also approved a new bill that bars prisoners, whose offenses affect national security, from using mobile phones in their prison cells.
