Doha Bank CEO receives 'Lifetime Achievement Award'

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Doha Bank Group CEO Dr R Seetharaman has received the "Lifetime Achievement Award" during The Banker Middle East Industry Awards 2015 Ceremony held recently at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel in Dubai.

Seetharaman was recognised for his personal contribution to the "greater understanding of the economic development of the region" and his support for the environment and business.

He received the award from Qatar Stock Exchange CEO Rashid al-Mansoori, who was the guest of honour, and CPI Financial chairman Saleh al-Akrabi during the ceremony.

In a speech, Seetharaman highlighted several of his key initiatives in the banking industry, including the expanded presence of Doha Bank across the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC).

He also spoke on Doha Bank's role in promoting sustainable development, which, according to Seetharaman, contributes towards economic growth, social development, and the environment.

"The sustainable development mission should aim for poverty eradication, environmental sustainability, and sustainable consumption and production. Some of the key challenges in sustainable development include climate change, energy security, and the increase in natural and man-made disasters," Seetharaman said. He added, "At the G20 meeting in November 2014, the US made a commitment of $3bn towards the Green Climate Fund, while Japan pledged that it would contribute $1.5bn to the climate fund."

According to Seetharaman, Doha Bank advocates and practices "Green Banking," one of the bank's core business philosophies that support sustainability for the future.

He said Doha Bank has also worked on the "Eco-Schools Programme," which partners with educational institutions to build awareness on key environmental issues.

"Aside from the launching of the 'Green Credit Card', Doha Bank's 'Green Accounts' are the bank's answer to a proactive approach on eco-friendly banking towards its drive for a cleaner and greener environment by promoting the concept of 'Paperless Banking'," he said.

He added, "Internet Banking, SMS Banking, Phone Banking, e-Remittances, and online bills payments also encourage eco-friendly banking." Seetharaman said Doha Bank also conducted the "Green Quiz" and seminars on global warming and climatic changes to spread environmental awareness.

"Doha Bank has hosted the 'Green Fun Run' and supported tree planting activities to generate awareness on environmental protection and preservation.

The bank has also provided funding for district cooling facilities," he added.
