(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Russian President Vladimir Putin conveyed to French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel in a phone call Friday his concern over "the frequent shelling" by Ukrainian regular troops on civilian targets in eastern Ukraine.
The bombardment results in increasing civilian casualties, the Kremlin said in a statement, citing readout of the call.
The three leaders exchanged views on the latest developments in eastern Ukraine and assessed the commitment to the ceasefire signed by the Ukrainian government and rebel groups in Minsk, Belarus, last February 12.
They highlighted the need to implement additional measures to bolster the fragile truce, including the redeployment of heavy weapons from the frontlines and establishing buffer zones under the supervision of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
Since the Ukrainian revolution that ousted president of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych in February 2014, pro-Russian demonstrations developed into armed insurgency against the government of Kiev with separatists taking hold of major cities across the eastern and southern regions.
