UN envoy sounds alarm about huge economic, security threats in Libya

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Bernadino Leon Thursday warned that Libya is facing serious economic and security threats.

"Libya is on the verge of economic and financial collapse. Libya is facing huge security threat. Also of ISIL which is trying to build a strong basis in Libya. No party can defeat the other. What is the use in fighting a civil war in which Daesh will become stronger," he told a news conference in the European Parliament (EP).

He said the UN is preparing a new draft for a political agreement on Libya but he also warned that the country is running out of time.

Leon added that he he will hand the draft to the Libyan parties in the first week of June.

"Will the elements in the new draft be enough to get the agreement of everybody and reach agreement in the coming three or four weeks is difficult to say. The situation is not easy. There is a chance and a possibility for a political agreement," he said.

"There will be an agreement if they understand very clearly that they will have to give up on important issues and be flexible. There is no military solution in Libya. It has to be political solution through dialogue," he strssed.

Leon earlier attended a conference on Libya organised by the Socialist Group in the EP with the participation of Libyan representatives.

On his part, Gianni Pittella President of the Socialist Groupin the EP said the conference on Libya focused on three issues, the humanitarian situation, migration crisis and the international community's role in achieving a political olution.

Speaking at the joint press conference, Pitella stressed that the Socilaists are against anymilitary intervention in Libya.
