OIC issues communique dealing with gamut of regional, int'l issues


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The just concluded 42nd ministerial meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) issued a final communique on Thursday in which it said it reviewed a number of issues on Palestine, Yemen, Syria, Libya, Iraq, Iran, and terrorism.

The communique said the OIC foreign ministers discussed the Palestinian cause which they fully supported, asking for a just and permanent peace in Palestine based on Israeli withdrawal from occupied Palestinian territories.

The ministers supported the notion of an independent Palestinian state with east Jerusalem for its capital city, stressing at the same time that they deplored Israeli policies in the occupied territories, including building a separation wall, expanding illegal settlements, and blockading the Gaza Strip.

They also fully backed Palestine's steps to join international organizations, protocols, and conventions as an active member and an independent state, according to the statement.

On the issue of Yemen, the ministers indicated in their communique the imperative that the legitimate government of President Abd Rabbu Mansur Hadi be reinstated and political dialogue be resumed between conflicting parties in accordance with the Gulf Initiative and relevant UN resolutions, in particular no.2216.

The ministers furthermore lauded results of the recently held conference in Riyadh (May 17-19, 2015) aimed at restoring legitimacy and national unity in Yemen.

The ministers expressed appreciation to Saudi establishment of a central location to deal with incoming relief aid to the Yemeni people, urging at the same time all countries to send much needed humanitarian assistance to Yemen.

On the issue of Syria, the ministers asked for cessation of hostilities there, urging all parties to abide by UN resolutions nos.2139 and 2165.

Turning to Libya, the ministers asked all parties to lay down their arms and choose peace instead to end the crisis in their country, applauding in that regard the UN envoy to Libya for his efforts at brokering a political resolution to the conflict there.

On Iraq, the ministers decried instability there, condemning terrorist organizations such as ISIL and voicing complete support to the Iraqi government in its efforts at instilling peace and security in the country.

On Iran, the ministers noted in their communique their welcome of the framework agreement between the 5+1 nations and Iran regarding the latter's nuclear program. They expressed hope that a final agreement would be reached by the end of June.

The ministers came out strongly against all shapes and forms of terrorism, condemning the recent act of terror in a mosque in Al-Qatif region in Saudi Arabia. They emphasized the need to dry up all sources of funding terrorism, coming out in support of UN resolution no.2199 regarding that.

The ministers voiced their strongest condemnation of such notorious terrorist groups as ISIL, Al-Qaeda, Al-Nusra, and all others that kill innocent people, considering the rise in terrorism as a direct threat to nations' stability and security, both regionally and internationally.

The ministers expressed their support of such countries as Mali, Afghanistan, Somalia, Ivory Coast, Comoros Islands, Djibouti, Bosnia Herzegovina and such peoples as those of Kosovo, Jammu Kashmir, and Azerbaijan.

They also supported OIC partnership with the African continent and expressed concern for the plight of the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.

Toward the end of the communique, the ministers congratulated His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah for having been honored by the UN as a Humanitarian Leader and Kuwait as a Humanitarian Center.
