UN Envoy discusses conflict in Syria with opposition leader

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The United Nations Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura on Thursday met with Syrian opposition leader Dr. Aref Dalila, who shared his views on the situation in Syria and the evolution of the ongoing conflict. They also discussed ways to support Syrian sides in launching a political process.

De Mistura also met with a delegation of elected Security Council members (Chile, Jordan, Lithuania, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Spain, Venezuela). They discussed the ongoing political efforts and possible role of the United Nations.

At the end of today's meetings, the Special Envoy pointed out in a press release that, "the absence of a political solution is turning the conflict in Syria ever more complicated".

He stressed that, "While all understand that an end to violence and a political solution are a matter of utmost urgency, what is critically needed now is action on the basis of convergence among all actors, before it is too late."
