Nigeria President holds valedictory cabinet meeting

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Nigeria's outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday held his last cabinet meeting, with prayers offered for the country as the mantle of leadership is passed onto President-elect Muhammadu Buhari.

At the meeting attended by all cabinet ministers, Jonathan said he tried his best to move Nigeria forward but was repeatedly "sabotaged".

"We did our best despite all the challenges," Jonathan said at his last cabinet meeting as President of Nigeria, the position he assumed in 2010 following the death of former President Umaru Yar'Adua with whom he had run in 2007.

Jonathan later contested for election in 2011 and won € the first time he was winning an election in his eventful political life.

Despite criticisms of his government failure to tackle corruption and Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria's northeast, Jonathan said Nigeria has made some landmarks under him.

"Some people are even calling for the probe of the government but I think in Nigeria there are a lot of many things that will be probed, very many things, even debts owed by states and debts owed by this country from 1960 up to this time," he said.

"They say it is Jonathan's administration that is owing these debts. I believe that anybody that is calling for probe must also ensure that this probe is extended beyond the Jonathan administration.

"Otherwise, to me, it will be witch-hunt. If we are very sincere, it is not only the Jonathan administration that should be probed," he said.

Jonathan was defeated in the March 28 presidential poll by opposition candidate Muhammadu Buhari, the first time an incumbent was trounced in an election.

Buhari is due for inauguration on May 29.
