OIC chief blasts Israel's escalated attacks against Palestinians

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Israeli occupation has escalated its attacks against Palestinian people in an unprecedented manner, chief of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) said.

"More than 60 percent of the land has been eaten up by Israeli settlement buildings. Thousands of Palestinian prisoners remain hounded in the occupation's prisons," OIC Secretary General Iyad Ameen Madani said in his speech during the 42nd session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers held in Kuwait on Wednesday.

The Gaza Strip is subject to illegal and unjust siege and the Palestinian citizens continue to live under difficult conditions both in the occupied territories and in the diaspora, particularly in Syria-based camps, he added.

"The City of Al-Quds Ash-Shareef continues to endure judaization, annexation, deportation, closure and settlement building policies. The holy sites, especially Al-Aqsa Mosque face grave and recurrent Israeli attacks in the form of incursion, desecration, denial of access to worshipers and attempts to divide the Mosque temporarily and spatially," Madani said.

He added that under these violations and apartheid policies practiced by Israel, the cohesion of the Palestinian reconciliation government remains a challenge which "we are waiting for our Palestinian brothers to surmount".

The General Secretariat has worked hard together with Palestinians to support the cause of Palestine in many ways including paying attention to the sourcing of legal capacities that establish war crimes and case of apartheid against Israel, its policies and the leadership, he made clear.

He called for reactivating the role of the international Quartet and expanding its membership and involving it effectively in the sponsorship of the efforts to achieve peace.

"We stress the need to strengthen full support for Palestine to continue to accede to international institutions, organizations, and conventions and to operationalize its role in the International Criminal Court," he said.

He pointed out that the International Fiqh Academy issued last March a resolution on the sharia provision on visiting Al-Quds to the effect that "the provision of the sharia on the visit is recommended and encouraged".

On Syria, Madani said the Syrian regime continues relentless and undeterred war of extermination on its people using heavy weaponry and explosive barrels as well as chemical and ballistic missiles that have claimed up to 300,000 lives and led to the displacement of more than six million people, including refugees, inside and outside Syria.

The OIC has stressed its support for a political settlement of the Syria crisis on the basis of the UN-sponsored "Geneva Communique" aimed at establishing pluralistic and democratic administration based on the principles of rule of law, equality and respect for human rights, he noted.

On Yemen, he said the OIC renews its principled position on the need to maintain the unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Syria.

It calls for speedy delivery of humanitarian assistance to affected people and areas in Syria, the OIC chief said.

He added that the organization welcomes holding the national dialogue conference in Riyadh under the theme "Yemen Rescue Conference", which adopted the "Riyadh Declaration" containing important resolutions setting out the basic terms of reference to govern the transitional phase of Yemen.

The organization also commends the "Riyadh Declaration" for reiterating support for legitimacy and participation of all Yemenis in nation building, he said.

The OIC also rejects the coup and its aftermath, committing to the principle of national partnership, the need for quick implementation of resolution 2216, the commencement of reconstruction of Yemen's state institutions and the launching, he pointed out.

The OIC chief said that there would be a ministerial meeting on the issue of Yemen next month.
