Egypt reiterates confidence in Kuwait as head of OIC FMs council


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shukry on Wednesday said that his country is confident that Kuwait would fulfil its mission effectively as head of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Foreign Ministers Council.

Shukry made the statement at the Council's 42nd session that kicked off earlier today.

He said that Egypt, current head of the OIC Summit, is looking forward to further cooperation with Kuwait, head of the ministerial council, and the organization's secretariat to consolidate OIC role backing Islamic work in all fields.

Shukri thanked Saudi counterpart, Adel Al-Jubeir, for the persistent efforts by the Kingdom as head of the 41st session.

Over the past year, the Islamic World experienced obvious and hazardous escalation of terrorism, the Egyptian Foreign Minister, said. He appreciated choosing the title of the 42nd ministerial session, namley "Joint Vision to Strengthen Tolerance and Reject Terrorism." He also said that Cairo put forward a draft resolution for combating extremism and terrorism through the OIC, reaffirming condemnation and rejection of all forms of terrorism, that has no link with a certain religion, culture or race.

It is a call for coordination and synergy among the OIC member states to counter the phenomenon through a multitude of procedures, topped with reactivating OIC's Combating Terrorism Convention adopted in 1999, Shukry said.

On Palestine, he stressed that Israel's intransigence remains the major obstacle to the efforts seeking comprehensive and just peace in the region to help the Palestinian people restore their legitimate rights, mainly establishing an independent state with East Jerusalem as a capital.

He said that Egypt had hosted an international conference in October 2014 with the aim of alleviating the severe humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.

Referring to Syria, Shukry said that Egypt has been seeking to give the Syrian opposition a chance to offer their broader views onr a peaceful solution. Cairo is hosting a second meeting for the Syrian opposition parties, June 8-9.

Meanwhile, Shukry emphasized that security of the Gulf is "integral to Egypt's national security," saying that Cairo is offering "substantial and clear" military and political support to the Saudi-led coalition responding to calls of "legitimacy in Yemen."
