(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed his concern about the escalation of fighting on the ground and air strikes since the end of the humanitarian pause, and reiterated his firm belief that there is no military solution to the conflict.
In a phone call with Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, Banآ's press office said, in a statement late on Wednesday, that the UN chief recalled that he had asked his Special Envoy for Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, to redouble his efforts to consult with the Yemeni Government, Yemenآ's political groupings and countries in the region with the aim of convening the Yemeni consultations in Geneva at the earliest possible opportunity.
During their conversation, Ban appreciated Hadi's reaffirmation of his commitment to UN-brokered negotiations and full support for, and participation of his Government in, the Geneva consultations.
Moreover, the UN Chief hoped that the consultations could resume as soon as possible.
In a statement released Tuesday, Ban asked Cheikh Ahmed to postpone the consultations following a request from the Government of Yemen and other key stakeholders for more time to prepare.
The statement also affirmed that Ban is actively working to convene the talks at the earliest possible time.
