Five new bus stations to come up in Doha before Metro is ready

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Five new bus stations have been planned in different parts of Doha and its neighbourhoods before the Doha Metro start its operations in 2019.

While informing this yesterday, Mowasalat CEO Khalid Nasser al-Hail and Executive Director Nasser al-Khanji said the new bus stations are planned to align with the requirements of the Doha Metro so that those intending to travel on the trains could take their onward connection buses to the nearest Metro head from the bus stations close to their homes.

The senior officials said this while answering a query on the necessity of Doha having more bus stations instead of the one and only Doha Bus Station. When pointed out that there was a nearly four-fold increase in the country's population now compared to the figures of 2005 when Mowasalat buses hit the road, al-Hail said the company was aware of the massive growth in the country's population and also those of the bus users.

The Ministry of Transport and Mowasalat are working out effective plans so that the future requirements of the country's passengers could also be taken care of, said al-Hail.

Among the five new bus stations, the locations of which were not disclosed yesterday, two would have garage facilities as well, explained al-Khanji.

Al-Hail informed yesterday that Mowasalat is developing more safety and security features at the Doha Bus Station to avert accidents. The place witnessed two accidents in the last six months, one of which claimed four lives.

Mowasalat, said al-Hail, has initiated the construction of concrete safety barriers to face emergencies and control the movement of commuters inside the bus station as their safety is the main priority of the company.

More works would be carried out in the bus station after the completion of the infrastructural development works in the Al Ghanim area where the station is situated now.

The CEO also informed that the company is developing a plan to overhaul and develop the bus parking facility at Mowasalat headquarters so that it could accommodate no less than 200 buses on the completion of the expansion works.

Adequate arrangements are being made to provide parking facility for upto 200 CNG run buses too, he said.
