TAMUQ signs agreement to attract more girls to study engineering


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMUQ) and Qatari Businesswomen Association (QBWA) have partnered to support female students and educate girls and their families on engineering to attract more girls to study engineering.

A memorandum of understanding has been signed, under which TAMUQ branch campus and QBWA will work with current and former TAMUQ female students through activities such as a speaker series, mentoring, internships, a self-development programme and other professional and social networking events.

QBWA is keen to support current and former female engineering students and believes women's participation in various fields is important. It has been working to build partnerships with organisations locally and internationally, especially those that focus on women advancement.

Aisha Alfardan, Vice-Chairperson, QBWA, said, "QBWA is employing all efforts and capabilities to enhance the role of women and enable them to participate and compete in various fields. It seeks to initiate partnerships and collaboration with institutions that support women. We have found in TAMUQ a capable partner who can develop the new generation of women and qualify them to play a key role in further developing the country."

The partners will deliver projects and programmes on the empowerment of students by offering QBWA membership to interested students which will give them access to its events and provide internship opportunities for TAMUQ female students through network companies and institutions owned or run by QBWA members.

It also enhances the possibility of cooperation between both parties in other areas, including educating and empowering women through the exchange of experiences and participation in conferences and events.

Dr Mark H Weichold, Dean and CEO, TAMUQ, said, "TAMUQ is proud that nearly 40 percent of our students are female and contributions our current and former female students are making in Qatar. "We look forward to working with QBWA to attract more girls to engineering and support and empower women once they've graduated from TAMUQ and entered the workplace."
