20 Syrian soldiers killed in regime stronghold

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) At least 20 Syrian government troops were killed by opposition fighters in Latakia province, the northwestern stronghold of President Bashar al-Assad's forces, on Tuesday, the opposition said.

In a statement, the Syrian Revolution General Commission said the Free Syrian Army clashed with the soldiers in the southeast of the province, which is the heartland of Assad's Shia Muslim Alawite sect.

In a separate development, the rebels seized government facilities around the strategically important village of Handarat, which lies 5 kilometers (3 miles) north of Aleppo on the road to the Turkish border, the statement added.

More than 220,000 people have been killed during Syria's four-year war, according to the UN.
