2 Saudis killed by Yemeni artillery fire

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Two Saudis were killed on Tuesday and eight others injured by artillery shells fired from neighboring Yemen, the Interior Ministry has said.

Ministry spokesman Mansour al-Turki said a policeman had been killed and three others injured when an artillery shell struck Saudi Arabia's southern Najran region while the victims had been clearing unexploded ordnance from the area, according to the official SPA news agency.

A Saudi civilian was also killed € and five others injured € when artillery shells struck residential areas in Najran, according to al-Turki.

Fractious Yemen has remained in turmoil since last September, when the Shia Houthi group overran capital Sanaa, from which it has sought to extend its influence to other parts of the country.

On March 25, Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies began an extensive military campaign targeting Houthi positions across Yemen.

Riyadh says its anti-Houthi campaign comes in response to appeals by embattled Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi € who is currently in Riyadh € for military intervention against the powerful Shia group.

The Houthis, for their part, denounce the offensive as unwarranted "Saudi-American aggression" against Yemen.
