Heat wave kills 800 in India

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) At least 800 people have died from sunstroke due to a heat wave sweeping across India as temperatures crawled past 47 degrees, foreign media reported Tuesday.

A total of 750 people have died in the last week as temperatures hit 47 degrees Celsius in the worst-hit state Andhra Pradesh in the south, Russia Today website said.

The Government of Andhra Pradesh said it opened up drinking water and medical assistance camps in areas that usually suffer from a lack of water, something that exacerbates the situation.

The air temperatures set a record in the state of Telangana in 1947, when it rose to 47.2 degrees Celsius.
