Chelsea Striker Costa Dropped From Spain Squad

(MENAFN- Arab Times) Chelsea striker Diego Costa has been omitted by Spain boss Vicente del Bosque from his 24-man squad for a friendly against Costa Rica and a Euro 2016 qualifier away to Belarus next month.

Sevilla duo Sergio Rico and Aleix Vidal are rewarded for their fine form with the Europa League finalists with their first call-up.

However, there was also disappointment for Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera and Bayern Munich's Thiago Alcantara as they too miss out.

Costa returned to action for Chelsea's two final Premier League games after over a month out with a recurring hamstring problem, scoring a penalty in the English champions' 3-1 win over Sunderland on Sunday to take his tally for the season to 21.

The Brazilian born striker has failed to replicate that form for his adopted country, though, scoring just once in seven appearances for Spain.

Del Bosque has also called up five promising youngsters in Jose Antonio Gaya, Juanmi, Jonny, Saul Niguez and Ruben Duarte to train with the squad with the Barcelona players and Juventus' Alvaro Morata not set to join up with their teammates until just two days before the game against Costa Rica due to their participation in the Champions League final.

There are also injury doubts over Cesc Fabregas and Sergio Ramos.

Fabregas ended the season wearing a protective mask after breaking his nose, whilst Ramos missed Real Madrid's final two league games of the season with a calf problem.

Spain host the World Cup quarter-finalists in Leon on June 11 before travelling to Borisov to face Belarus three days later.

The European champions sit just second in Group C of qualifying, three points behind leaders Slovakia, but are still well-placed to qualify for next year's European Championships in France with the top two in each group progressing.

Top Germany stars Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller and Toni Kroos were notable absentees as Joachim Loew named his squad for a friendly with the United States and a Euro 2016 qualifier with Gibraltar.

"It's a well deserved rest with another big season coming up," explained Loew, who used the trio to great effect in winning the 2014 World Cup.

The United States, led by former Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann, can avenge their 1-0 first-round defeat out in Brazil when the old friends meet again in Cologne on June 10.

Three days later the world champions want three points from their Euro 2016 Group D qualifier against tiny Gibraltar as they seek to clinch a ticket to France next summer.

A point behind Poland after five games and level on ten points with Scotland and two points ahead of Ireland, Germany have found themselves in a tight pool.

Thirteen of the World Cup winning squad feature in Loew's 20-man group named on Tuesday.

Defenders Ben Davies and James Collins were absent from the Wales squad announced by manager Chris Coleman on Tuesday for next month's 2016 European Championship qualifying showdown with Belgium.

Tottenham Hotspur left-back Davies dislocated his shoulder during his side's 2-2 Premier League draw at Southampton a month ago, while experienced West Ham United centre-back Collins has sustained a calf strain.

It leaves Coleman missing two important members of his back four ahead of the June 12 encounter with Belgium at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Belgium currently lead Wales on goal difference in qualifying Group B, with Israel two points back in third place.

The top two teams will qualify for next year's tournament in France, with the third-place side either qualifying directly - if they are the best third-place team in the nine groups - or going into the play-offs.

Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale and Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey are the stand-out names in Coleman's 23-man squad.

Leicester City midfielder Andy King returns after a two-match ban, while defenders James Chester, Paul Dummett and Adam Matthews are recalled after missing the 3-0 away win over Israel in March through injury.

Wales, who drew 0-0 away to Belgium in November, are bidding to reach their first major tournament since the 1958 World Cup.

Austria striker Rubin Okotie will return to the national team for next month's Euro 2016 qualifier in Russia.

Okotie, who scored for the Group G leaders in a 1-0 win over Russia in November, missed Austria's friendly against Bosnia in March but has been included in the 25-man squad announced Tuesday by coach Marcel Koller.

Austria will be without injured midfielders David Alaba, Veli Kavlak, Christoph Leitgeb and Andreas Ulmer for the June 14 game in Moscow.

Graz defender Michael Madl and Rapid forward Philipp Schobesberger got their first call-up from Koller, who will reduce the squad to 23 players after the weekend.

Austria leads the group with 13 points from five games, ahead of Sweden with nine and Russia with eight. The group also includes Montenegro, Liechtenstein and Moldova.

The top two teams in each group and the best third-place team will qualify directly for the tournament in France, while the remaining third-place teams will advance to the playoffs.

Austria has never qualified for a European Championship but took part in the 2008 event as a co-host with Switzerland.
