Egypt summons Pakistan charge d'affaires

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Egypt has summoned Pakistan's charge d'affaires to inform him about the country's total rejection of Islamabad's statement about recent death sentences against former president Mohammad Morsi and his supporters.

An Egyptian court had referred 122 out of 166 defendants, including Morsi to the country's Grand Mufti to consider possible death sentences against them over alleged jailbreak and espionage charges.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry told the Pakistani diplomat that his country's statement is considered "interference in Egypt's internal affairs and includes unacceptable comments on the Egyptian judicial system," Egypt's official news agency (MENA) reported.

"This interference overshadows relations between both countries," it added.

Pakistan had expressed "considerable concern" over recent death sentences for former President Mohammad Morsi and his supporters.

"The news of the death sentence awarded to former elected President of Egypt Mr. Mohammad Morsi and more than 100 others has been received in Pakistan with considerable concern," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Morsi was ousted by the army in July 2013 amid mass protests against his one-year rule. He has since faced a number of charges, including inciting violence, conspiring with foreign powers and killing protesters.
