(MENAFN- Gulf Times) A win to start her French Open bid helped Liverpool supporter Caroline Wozniacki overcome the disappointment of seeing Steven Gerrard's final game for the Reds turn into a disaster.
While preparing for the start of Roland Garros, the Dane kept an eye on Liverpool crumbling to a tennis-score loss to Stoke City in the final game of the Premier League season on Sunday, Gerrard scoring in a 6-1 hammering.
"Wow.. At least Stevie G scored in his last game.. #tryingtofindthepositives," Wozniacki tweeted after Anfield legend Gerrard's final match before he moves to Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy.
That defeat followed a 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace in Gerrard's last game as a Liverpool player at Anfield a week earlier.
And after beating Italy's Karin Knapp 6-3, 6-0 in the first round of the French Open on Tuesday, Wozniacki said: "Well, on the positive side, Stevie G scored in his last game.
"And the positive as well is that it was the last game of the season, I suppose, and they have a break. There was not really much else positive in that last game.
"The last game at Anfield obviously was very emotional I think for everybody. Obviously he's been playing for so many years, and as a captain, and he's done so much for the club and for the team.
"You know, I think it's sad that he's not playing anymore. It's kind of surreal that he's not going to come back to Anfield next season. It's going to be strange, Liverpool without Steven Gerrard."
Former world number one Wozniacki, who is seeded five in Paris where she has never previously gone beyond the quarter-finals, is the daughter of a former Polish footballer who played professionally in Denmark.
Her brother Patrik also plays football in the Danish lower leagues.
Wozniacki struggled to find her rhythm initially against Knapp and the first six games on Court Suzanne Lenglen lasted almost an hour.
However, the 27-year-old Italian Knapp, who came into the second Grand Slam of the year on the back of claiming her second career title in Nuremberg last week, was the architect of her own downfall in the end with a total of 50 unforced errors.
Wozniacki now goes on to face Germany's Julia Goerges, who beat Coco Vandeweghe of the US 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.
