Thurswell Law Gerald E. Thurswell is interviewed on News Talk WCHB

AttorneyGerald E. Thurswell was a guest on the Mildred Gaddis Show that airs from Detroit Michigan. The topic of the interview centered around police brutality the commentary includes thoughts on how police departments really need to look into the actions of their officers and how the public regards their own safety issues.

Mr. Thurswell is a Michigan attorney and a recognized authority. He has handled many cases involving police related issues. Gaddis opens the program by pointing out that Thurswell has handled many cases including high profile ones such as the McKenzie Cochran and Renisha McBride cases.
Gaddis introduces Thurswell to her audience as a Michigan personal injury lawyer. She describes the brutality that Freddie Gray experience with an incident that happened in Baltimore which took his life. She asked Thurswell for his professional opinions.

Thurswell comments that Gray’s hands were cuffed together as well as at his ankles. The officers laid him in the police vehicle on the floor and there was a conversation directed to the driver that he should drive in a rough manner. This careless and intentional rough driving caused Gray to be tossed around on the floor where he was severely hurt from a bolt on the floor. Grey begged for medical help but his cries were ignored. The driver of the van made three more stops before arriving at the police station. It was there when one of the officers said he needed to be hospitalized. Gray lost his life.

Thurswell explains that Grey did no wrong and he was being arrested for what seemed to be just looking at the police officer. Grey was accused of having a pocketknife but the professionals in Baltimore tell us that pocketknives in Baltimore are acceptable and carrying one is not against the law.

It is believed that the injuries that were inflected on Gray killed him. There was no reason for the arrest. He obviously was healthy before the arrest since he was seen running for his life. The injury to his head and the severing of the spinal cord occurred in the van which was purposely being driven roughly.

Gaddis makes a statement about how we need to trust police officers. The conversation refocuses on the need for additional police training. Both agreed that all officers should be required to go through a psychological evaluation before being given assignments on the streets.

There are many statistics about injuries occurring during their arrests and authorities need to review them case by case. Everyone is looking for answers. Keep in mind that not everything gets reported. Work is being done to prevent such cases and the need to narrow the case numbers down has been recognized.

Thurswell puts it eloquently “Even one is too many.” Things like this just should not happen. Gaddis points out that law enforcement teams need more funding to correct these errors. Unfortunately the government is unwilling to expand the current budget.

The reality is that there are many incidents happening and only a few incidents make it to the news.
