Fire at nursing home kills 38 in central China

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) At least 38 people have been killed and six others injured after a fire broke out a nursing home in the central Chinese province of Henan, authorities said Tuesday.

Henan's work safety administration said the accident occurred at 7.55 p.m. (1255GMT) Monday in a building of a privately-owned nursing home in Pingdingshan city, according to state news agency Xinhua.

Two of the six victims who sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital remain in serious condition.

The establishment housed more than 100 seniors, who were divided based on whether they were able or disabled.

The fire was reportedly caused by a circuit problem, a senior witness told Henan TV's legal channel, which reported that dozens of hemiplegic paralyzed seniors had been trapped when it sparked, as cited by the China Daily.

A search and rescue operation is ongoing.
