GCC coordinates to unify customary measures at train stations by 2018 - Kuwaiti official

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states started considering the implementation of unified customary measures to transfer goods and passengers of member states by trains and railways by 2018, a Kuwaiti official said.

"The GCC Customs Union asked the Secretariat to present a working paper on customary services at train stations to be discussed in the union's upcoming gathering," Director General of Kuwait's General Administration of Customs (GAC) Khaled Al-Saif told KUNA on Monday.

The union recommended forming delegations of customs to pay field visits to US, Mexico, Britain, Spain, China and Australia to be acquainted with their experiences and the advanced technologies used in transferring goods and passengers by train, Al-Saif, who heads the Kuwaiti delegation to the 11th meeting of union that kicked off in Doha on Sunday, added.

The union's officials coordinate with ministries of Communications, Finance, Economy, GAC and companies of rails to define measures of customs and General Department of Immigration needed for cross-border of GCC countries, he noted.

He said the meeting also discussed a mechanism of direct transfer of customs tariffs automatically among GCC member states, noting Kuwait was a leading country in this regard.

He indicated that Kuwait received delegations of the union secretariat and Saudi Arabia to benefit from its experience so as to implement this mechanism between the two countries.

The mechanism will be implemented inside all GCC countries by the end of this year, he made clear.

Al-Saif said the union was briefed on the report of GCC Secretariat on specifying commitments agreed by the countries pertaining to goods that will be discussed by the competent committees.

The 11th meeting aims at promoting cooperation and coordination in the customary field.

The gathering discussed means of developing scientific initiatives that seek to improve performance of customs.

The Kuwaiti delegation headed by Al-Saif is participating in the event.
