Jordan calls for 'serious' Palestinian-Israeli talks

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Jordan called on Sunday for launching "serious" and "effective" negotiations between the Palestinians and the Israelis.

Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh said the negotiations should solve final status issues that had a direct impact on his country's interests.

He called for abiding by the two-state solution, saying that there would be no peace without this solution.

"There will not be security without peace," Judeh said.

"Peace can bring security, not only to Israel, but also to the whole region," he added during a meeting with the representatives of 43 Union for the Mediterranean member states.

Around 2 million Palestinian refugees live in Jordan. The Arab state seeks to secure a right of return for these refugees as well as resolve issues related to Islamic holy sites that are still under its mandate in the Palestinian territories.

Discussions during Judeh's meeting with the representatives of the member states focused on developments in the Middle East region, especially the Palestinian-Israeli peace process and the security situation in Syria and Iraq.

This is the first time a union meeting is held outside the European Union.

Judeh said a continued Palestinian-Israeli conflict would be cause for more instability in the region.
