Al Meera to offer discount on 1,000 items in Ramadan

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Al Meera Consumer Goods has announced it would be selling around 1,000 goods at cost, including 750 promotional packages, as part of its annual Ramadan campaign.

Deputy CEO Dr Mohamed Nasser al-Qahtani told Gulf Times that all Al Meera stores would also include at least 450 additional products from the list provided by Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) for the holy month.

"We expect the MEC list to be finalised later in the week," he said on the sidelines of yesterday's opening of Al Meera's 41st branch in Muraikh.

Asked about the products to be included in the campaign, al-Qahtani said the items would consist mostly of juices, milk, dates "and other fast-moving consumer goods usually taken during the holy month of Ramadan".

Since the implementation of the mandatory initiative six years ago, the MEC has continued to increase the number of commodities from 114 to more than 400 this year.

According to the Consumer Protection Department, the initiative also aims to boost the purchasing power of citizens and expatriates and advance the social role of traders in the country.

"While our expansion and growth has increased rapidly, we also keep in mind the needs of our consumers during Ramadan hence, we are selling a significant number of commodities at cost; we don't add any profit to these goods," al-Qahtani stressed.

In relation to its expansion strategy, al-Qahtani revealed that aside from its five stores in Oman, Al Meera was keen on opening other branches in Jordan and Egypt.

"We're just waiting for excellent opportunities offered in other countries before we decide to embark on expansion projects outside Qatar. Economic stability is important to us but once we see an opportunity we will take it," al-Qahtani stressed.

Citing "stiff market competition", al-Qahtani said: "We need to cover as much area as we can since we also have other competitors and we need to do something to stay ahead in the market.

"Strong market penetration is a significant part of our strategy to get majority of the market share. This will also be complemented by attractive promos to increase footfall in our stores."
