Small Jazan town struggles with piling garbage
(MENAFN- Arab News) JAZAN: Residents of Dhabia in Jazan say that their city has poor infrastructure and services including garbage collection only once a week a poor sanitation network and inadequate pumping of fresh water to their homes.
There are more than 12000 people living in the town which is expanding rapidly and requires urgent attention according to residents quoted recently in a local publication.
They said Dhabia is a strategic town in the south of the Kingdom on the international road that leads to other regions and Yemen. The city also does not have proper stormwater drainage and electricity poles are often blown over during inclement weather they said.
Khalawi Hamza a citizen said there was garbage collection only once a week. 'Even when the vehicles come to collect the garbage the workers do not carry away all the waste. We have filed complaints but officials say they only have one truck' he said.
Abdo Moaafa another citizen said the roads are full of potholes and have not been properly maintained for 15 years. There is also sewage running into the streets from houses.
In addition residents have been building speed humps on the roads without permission and this damages cars he said.
Resident Ali Al-Ryani said many streets no longer have lights. 'The responsible bodies should immediately replace the lights to make it safer especially for women and children.'
Hassan Al-Huzaimi a citizen said the residents want some of the electricity poles moved because they are hazardous. He also complained about the lack of drainage for rainwater and sanitation. 'Everyone here in Dhabia is complaining about the shortage of services at all levels' he said.
