Qatar- Aspire's skateboarding and BMXing contest ends today

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Nearly 100 people are taking part in the second edition of Skateboarding and BMXing competition which end today at Aspire Zone.

The three-day event is organised by Aspire Zone and Qatar Extreme Sports (QES) in celebration of 'Go-Skateboarding Day', the world's largest annual gathering for the skateboarding community.

The competition between Torch Doha and Khalifa Stadium brings together skateboarding professionals and aficionados.

"The competition is a great one with a big number of visitors coming to watch it and there is a lot of support from sponsors," Farhan Al Sayed, Founder and Patron, QES, told this daily yesterday.

QES' goal is to raise awareness among Qatari youth about skateboarding, rollerblading and BMX and the event is gaining popular in the country, he added.

"Hopefully we will have skate parks in popular venues such as Aspire Zone and Katara because we are using temporary skate parks during competitions like this," he said.

As QES members and extreme sports enthusiasts are spread across the country, QES holds activities at various locations to take the sport to people and make it more popular among the youth as well, he added.

"We are also active in social media. We have a Facebook page people can visit," he said.

The first two days of the competition saw professionals showcasing and performing their best and latest skateboarding tricks and moves.

Today's event will see BMXers pitted against each other to demonstrate BMXing skills and talents.

Open for experts and enthusiasts, the competition is engaging the community to not only watch, but also take part in an intense, adrenaline-filled three-day celebration of the art and sport of skateboarding and BMX.

The competition falls under a growing list of world-class activities and events Aspire Zone has been organizing to promote sustainable, healthy and fitness-centred lifestyles in the local community.

"We have made great strides in identifying and bringing to Qatar activities, programmes and events that would support our community in leading a sustainable and active lifestyle and integrating healthy habits into it.

"We are happy to reap benefits of these efforts as the community continues to engage and take part in these initiatives. We're on the right track for a healthier future," said Abdulla Al Khater, Events Manager, Aspire Zone.
