May 22 2015 Washington D.C.: The Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law a national civil rights organization based in Washington D.C. announced this morning that it is deeply saddened by the recent death of Dr. Robert S. Wistrich a world-renowned scholar on Anti-Semitism and one of the greatest intellectuals of our time who passed away earlier this week at the age of 70.
Known as a leading scholar of the history of Anti-Semitism Dr. Wistrich was born in 1945 in Kazakhstan earned his BA and MA both at the University of Cambridge and earned his PhD at the University of London.
He served as the Neuburger Professor of European and Jewish History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem tenured in 1982 and head of the University’s Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Anti-Semitism.
Dr. Wistrich has written numerous well-receivedhighly acclaimed books about the Nazis Socialism World Jewry and Anti-Semitism among those the award-winning works “The Longest Hatred” and “A Lethal Obsession.”
As a leading advocate for the analysis of contemporary Anti-Semitism where he understood that the Anti-Semitism we see today most of the time hides itself in Anti-Israel rhetoric.
He noted
“You have the denial for instance that there is any relationship between so-called criticism of Israel and anti-Semitism but in fact most of what goes by the name of criticism of Israel is feeding on a daily basis the growing demonization of the Jewish state which in turn spills over I would say almost with mathematical inevitability into some form of dislike hostility or even loathing of Jews.”
LDB President Kenneth L. Marcus commented “Dr. Wistrich undeniably left a remarkable legacy behind him and with that together we must continue our fight in his name.”
