UAE chairs 64th Ordinary Session of Arab Ministers of Information Council in Cairo


(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) The 64th meeting of the Arab Information Ministers' Council began today under the Chairmanship of the United Arab Emirates, at the General Secretariat of the Arab League in Cairo.

The UAE delegation to the meeting is led by Ibrahim Al Abed, Director-General of the National Media Council, NMC. The delegation includes Juma Al Laim, Director of the Media Contents Department at the Council and Ali Al Shamili, in-charge of Arab League Affairs at the UAE Embassy in Cairo.

The meeting brings together Arab Ministers of Information, Directors of news Agencies, and representatives of Media Institutions of Arab States, Ahmed Ben Helli, Deputy Secretary-General of the Arab League, and Dr. Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, Assistant Secretary-General, Head of Media and Communications Department, League of Arab States.

The new session of the Council is being held under the theme, "The role of media in spreading the values of tolerance and the fight against extremism", and will discuss a 17-item agenda on various issues pertaining to Arab media, strategic visions for developing the industry and Arab common actions in the field of media, particularly the strategy to combat terrorism.

The meeting will also discuss a new plan for Arab media activities in non-Arab countries, a pan-Arab media strategy, the Palestinian issue, and the role of the Arab media in countering terrorism.

The agenda also includes the designation of an "Arab Media Day", to fall on 21st April every year to recognise the role of media personnel and organisations in addressing the challenges facing the industry.

The meeting is also set to discuss the amendment of the Charter of the Council of Arab Information Ministers and re-instating the Arab Permanent Committee on Media, which will discuss intra-Arab media cooperation on such issues as the Palestinian cause and the role of Arab media in countering terrorism.

High on the meeting's agenda is a UAE-proposal on the role of the media in promoting values of tolerance, combating extremism and building a culture of moderation and acceptance of others' opinions.
