Fujairah government plans another small port


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The new facility which will be dedicated to supply vessels with fuel will be launched in June 2016.

Fujairah: Fujairah government is planning to set up a small port next to the main emirate’s seaport according to Captain Mousa Murad director-general of Fujairah Seaport.

The new facility which will be dedicated to supply vessels with fuel will be launched in June 2016 he said.

It will be handling as many as 105 small ships to supply fuels to big vessels he added.

“The initial cost of new port comes to the tune of Dh70 million” the director-general said adding that the capacity of new facility will be expanded to 200 small ships in the future.

“Leading companies have shown interest in the project and submitted their bids” he said.

referring to latest data he said Fujairah port provides maritime and logistic services to almost 14000 vessels annually. “We have noted 40 per cent growth in ships movements at the port last year” he said. He said the port received 14015 ships in the waiting dock last year compared to 13500 ships in 2013 and 11862 in 2012. Captain Murad said ship movement has increased manifold in past 15 years as only 4830 ships docked at the port in 2000.

At present the port has 12 old wharfs nine oil terminals that have been constructed recently he said adding that the future development plan includes setting up of 21 new docks of which nine have already been built. He said the storage capacity of the present petrol tanks reached nine million tonnes and this will be increased to 14 million tonnes by 2020.

“It is expected that ship movements at Fujairah seaport will be increased when Ittehad Train begins operations and links the cargo traffic from the emirate to Dubai and Abu Dhabi.”

“The cross-emirates train will serve enormously the transport of goods and containers handling as well as random shipments mainly the quarries and gravels which size total approximately 28 million tonnes last year” he said.
