Challenge Oman race cancelled

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Organisers of the Challenge Oman one of the three legs of the US$1mn Triple Crown Triathlon Series which was scheduled to be held on August 7 have cancelled the event.

The organisers cited the political instability in the neighbouring Yemen as the reason for cancelling the event.

The Triple Crown Series had begun with Challenge Dubai on February 27. The three-leg series has Challenge Bahrain (December 12) as the final destination is what is considered to be the world's richest half-Iron distance race.

Organised by The Challenge Family it is the fastest growing global long distance triathlon series that has 44 full and half distance triathlons in 21 countries. The organisers said that plans are currently underway for an alternative venue to host the prestigious series.

'While we are disappointed not to be able to showcase the beauty of Oman to the world cancelling the race and moving the Triple Crown for 2015 is in the best interests of both the athletes and the local community' said Challenge Family CEO Zibi Szlufcik on the official website of the event.

'Special thanks must go out to His Highness Sheikh Nasser al Khalifa for his inspirational support of the sport which is taking it to new levels around the world. We are very much looking forward to announcing the location of the second race of the Nasser bin Hamad Triple Crown Series shortly.'

Switzerland's Daniela Ryf and Kiwi Terenzo Bozzone winners of Challenge Dubai in the men's and women's categories respectively are in the battle against the world's top professionals to keep in the running for triathlon's ultimate prize and the chance to become an instant millionaire.
