1.6mn expats employed in Oman over 1.2mn in private sector alone


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The number of expatriate workforce in Oman reached 1604158 at the end of April this year. There has been a 0.6 per cent rise compared to March when the number was 1594464. 

The National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) in its latest report broke down the expat employee numbers as 1416162 men and 187996 women.

The private sector alone employs over 1.2mn expatriate workers (1264209 men and 30281 women). The number of expat workers in the family sector (those working for families and individuals)  was 249301 of whom 136673 were women. This is a 0.6 per cent rise from the March figure of 112628.

The number of those employed in the government sector was 60367 - 39352 men and the rest women marking a 0.1 per cent increase from March.

Educational qualification

A majority of labourers (589373 of whom 66234 are women) have preparatory school education. As many as 422304 can read and write. This number includes 49024 women. The percentage of expatriate workers with primary school certificate increased 0.5 per cent from March. There numbers touched 145902. The number of expatriate workers holding secondary school certificate was 241857 (224571 men and 17286 women); 52942 including 9079 women had diplomas.

Expatriates with university degrees stood at 92610 (76501 men and 16109 women). Expat workers with higher diploma stood at 4933 an 0.1 per cent increase while the percentage of workers with Master's degrees fell 0.4 per cent to 5953.

There were 2793 expats with PhD. The number of illiterate workers remained the same at 21416 (19306 men and 2110 women).

Maximum workers are Indians

A majority of expatriate workers are Indians. They numbered 619850 at the end of April showing a 0.9 per cent increase from March. The April figures included 585836 men and 34014 women. The number of Bangladeshi workers was 554114 (a 0.7 per cent rise from March). Of these 528332 were men.

The number of workers from Pakistan saw a 0.3 per cent rise to reach 215162 (214016 men and 1146 women). The number of Ethiopian workers fell 2.6 per cent from March to reach 30833. The number of women among them was 30515.

The number of women was higher among Indonesian expats also. Of the total of 39737 39085 were women. The number of expatriate workers coming from the Philippines reached 31942 (21415 women and 10527 men).

There was 0.2 per cent increase in the number of Egyptian employees. Their number stood at 23426 of whom 4924 were women.

Till April end there were 12816 Nepalese and 13672 Sri Lankans working in Oman. As for the other nationalities the number reached 62606 with a growth of 1.4 per cent. Muscat governorate had the highest concentration of expat workers (718133) followed by  North Batinah (208042) and Dhofar (176968).
