Algeria claims to kill 25 'terrorists' in major crackdown

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) The Algerian army has killed 25 "terrorists" in a major security operation carried out in the northern Bouira province, the Defense Ministry said Wednesday.

According to a ministry statement, army troops launched a major crackdown on militant hideouts in the Ferdjioua district on Tuesday, killing 22 "terrorists" in the first day of the operation.

The death toll increased on Wednesday after three militants were killed in clashes with the army.

The ministry has not identified the slain militants or provided details regarding their affiliations, but local security experts believe that Algeria's northern provinces are home to numerous strongholds for Al-Qaeda and Daesh-linked militant groups.

Last October, Deputy Defense Minister and Army Chief-of-Staff Ahmed Gaid Salah said the army was preparing for a wide-scale operation aimed at eliminating "terrorist groups" countrywide.
