Gunman killed, policeman injured in Egypt Sinai clashes

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) A gunman was killed and a policeman injured in an exchange of fire in the northeastern quadrant of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula on Wednesday, a security source has said.

Five gunmen were also injured in the clashes, which occurred in the city of Arish, the source told Anadolu Agency.

Egyptian authorities have yet to officially comment on the incident.

For almost two years, Egypt has been cracking down on militants in the restive Sinai Peninsula, which shares borders with both Israel and the blockaded Gaza Strip.

The campaign comes amid a spike in attacks on security personnel since mid-2013, when the military deposed Mohamed Morsi € Egypt's first democratically elected president € following mass protests against his one-year rule.
