UAE- Winners of Thalassemia competition honoured

(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) Under the auspicious patronage of the wife of HH Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Advisor to His Highness the Head of State, Sheikha Sheikha bint Saif Al Nahyan, Chairperson of Emirates Thalassemia Society (ETS), an official awarding ceremony was held to honour the winners of "What is Thalassemia?" competition for 2014-2015 in Dubai.

Sheikha Shama bint Sultan bin Khalifa honoured winners and strategic partners and sponsors of the award, which was organised by the ETS.

The ETS said that this year's cycle had beaten all expectations in terms of student participation because the award harnessed social networking sites - Instagram, Facebook and Twitter - to raise awareness about the disease among the largest number of students in schools, universities and members of the public and to deliver its message of creating a Thalassemia free society.

Those honoured included the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Abu Dhabi Education Council, Knowledge and Human Development Authority in Dubai, and other supporters, sponsors and volunteers who turned the competition into a resounding success. Student winners in the categories of Instagram, Facebook and Twitter were also honoured.

Khaleda Khamas, ETS Executive Director, in her address, said results of this year's competition were satisfactory and helped in heightening public awareness about the disease.

She noted that the competition had drawn 28,064 followers on the social networking sites, a figure which she described as a ''record'' in a short span of time.

The annual competition, "What is Thalassemia?," is a nation-wide campaign to raise health awareness about Thalassemia among the youth, the teaching faculty and the families.
