Arab ministers allot USD 200,000 to support health conditions in Yemen

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The 44th session of Executive Bureau of the Arab Ministers of Health Council held in Geneva on Monday decided to offer USD 200,000 to help provide urgently-needed medical supplies in Yemen.

The session, held on the sidelines of the 68th session of the World Health Assembly (WHA), is approving a host of decisions related to health conditions in the Arab region.

Health conditions in Yemen and among Yemeni refugees featured high on the agenda of the ministerial meeting, Kuwait's Minister of Health Dr. Ali Al-Obaidi told KUNA.

He added that the contribution would be channeled through the WHO to guarantee delivery of the urgent aid to people in dire need for it.

Al-Obaidi called for close monitoring of the refugees to dispel fears of any potential spread of diseases among them. This includes supporting the government of Djibouti to help it care for Yemeni refugees who fled fighting at home to the Horn of Africa state.

On the Palestinian scene, the Arab Ministers of Health endorsed a decision to offer USD 100,000 to back the Palestinian health sector, Al-Obaidi said.

In addition, the meeting supported a draft bill submitted to the WHA to urge the international rights and health organizations to intervene with the Israeli authorities to commit them to provide due health care for Palestinian detainees.

In the meantime, the 44th session of the Executive Bureau of the Arab Ministers of Health Council discussed the health conditions and troubles of Syrian refugees in neighboring countries, the Minister said.

The Council is called upon to offer support so that the refugees could "face the health challenges they are experiencing as part of their tragic conditions, he said. USD 100,000 will be given to the host countries to help them.

Kuwait has been handling the Syria crisis from a humanitarian perspective, Al-Obaidi said, referring to great efforts by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah in that respect.
