Egypt's FM, UN envoy discuss Yemen

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri has affirmed his country's firm stance on Yemen, namely establishing "a true democracy" that guarantees respect of legitimate government and maintains the country's sovereignty.

Shukri had talks on Yemen in Cairo on Tuesday with visiting UN Special Envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh.

The meeting discussed the outcome of the Riyadh Conference on Yemen that wrapped up its activities in the Saudi capital earlier today, besides latest developments in the country.

The UN Envoy briefed the Foreign Minister on the latest security and political events in Yemen and his participation in the "Saving Yemen and Building Federal State" conference, ministry spokesman Bader Abdul-Ati said in a statement.

Ould Cheikh said he hoped for an extension of a five-day humanitarian ceasefire in Yemen after it expired late Sunday, but violation by the "anti-legitimacy" side, the Houthi militants, failed all hopes, according to the spokesman.

The UN envoy reiterated respect of legitimacy and the efforts seeking a political solution to the crisis in Yemen. He stressed Egypt's role for realizing stability there, as well as in the entire region.

Shukri and Ould Cheikh also touched upon security developments in the Arab region in general and affirmed the necessity of moving to counter the phenomenon that "threatens all."
