UN envoy confirms regional concern on worsening situation in Syria


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said there was growing concern among regional countries on the deteriorating situation in and around Syria and the need for an immediate political solution.

The UN envoy welcomes the keenness of countries, inside and out of the region, to support UN efforts in this domain, and the time has come for the sides involved to put the interests of the Syrian people first, and think of the impacts of their actions, read a statement by his office.

De Mistura had met officials from Oman, led by its UN permanent envoy Abdullah Al-Rahbi, to discuss the likelihood that dialogue could help reach a political solution in Syria.

He also met Iraq's permanent envoy Mohammad Saber Ismael, who spoke of steps his government is pursuing aimed at the goal in addition to ending the conflict between warring factions in Syria, the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation there and the fight against ISIL militants.

The encounters come as part of a series of talks the UN official has been assuming with regional and international players, involved in Syria since the start of May, aimed at forming a bigger picture on the deadly armed conflict which has entered its fifth year.
