Social Aid To Reach KD 400 Mln In 2016

(MENAFN- Arab Times) Kuwait's state social welfare allotments are expected to reach approximately KD 400 million ($1.3 billion) in 2016 due to mounting demand for support from cash-strapped segment of the society. Dr. Matar Al-Mutairi, Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor Undersecretary, speaking during a ministry's meeting presided by the Minister, Hind Al- Sebeeh, said in view of mounting demand for social support, according to the current pace, the budget allocations for social aid would reach KD 400 million next year, as compared to only KD 120 million in past years.

Al-Mutairi said during the meeting, attended by representatives of the World Bank (WB) and General Secretariat of Planning and Development that the ministry, since two years ago, has been seeking in coordination with the WB to tackle "some flaws and shortcomings in the system of aid allotments and disbursement. "World Bank officials have pin pointed some shortcomings in the assistance regime and we have been trying to avert them to trim disbursement of aid to individuals who do not deserve such support," he said.

Certain rules and terms have been set for work of the aid committee, where aid applications are thoroughly examined before deciding whether to provide the assistance or not, he said, indicating that the new measures have proven successful. For her part, Minister Al-Sebeeh praised a WB study regarding the "social security network in Kuwait," expressing hope that the Bank's recommendations would be implemented in short and long terms, acknowledging that providing aid to the un-illegible has contributed to spread some negative practices such as complacency and lack of desire to work.
