Houthis hit for breaking truce

(MENAFN- Arab News) RIYADH: The Saudi-led coalition on Monday blamed cease-fire violations by Iran-backed rebels for the resumption of airstrikes after a five-day truce aimed at delivering aid in Yemen.

Coalition spokesman Brig. Gen. Ahmed Al-Assiri accused the rebels of not respecting the Saudi-proposed truce. 'That's why we do what is necessary to be done' he told AFP.
Yemen's foreign minister told Reuters the coalition had decided not to renew the truce because the agreement had been repeatedly broken by the Houthis.
'That's what we said before that if they start again we will start again' said Riyad Yassine in Riyadh.
An hour after the cease-fire expired air raids hit the rebel-held presidential palace in the main southern city Aden as well as a base of the pro-rebel special forces there military officials and witnesses said.
The coalition also targeted rebel positions in Aden's neighborhoods of Tawahi and Khor Maksar.
Meanwhile Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman held talks on phone with US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter on latest developments in the region.
Al-Arabiya news channel said Saudi forces fired artillery at Houthi positions over the border in Yemen. It said the rebels hit a crossing point in Najran province.
Al-Assiri accused the rebels of exploiting the truce to their advantage. 'These militia did not stop their fighting. They continued to attack borders to attack cities in Yemen' Al-Assiri said adding there was 'a very big change on the ground' during the pause.
He accused the rebels of moving missiles with a range of about 70 km toward the border with Saudi Arabia said there was shelling 'every day' of the Saudi boundary zone and the rebels 'hijacked' food and fuel aid in Yemen.
Separately a peace conference for Yemen expected next week in Geneva was put on hold on Monday as fighting resumed. UN spokesman Farhan Haq said 'part of the problem is that the fighting has once more resumed.'
