Egypt court sentences 'terror group leader' to death

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) An Egyptian court on Monday sentenced a man to death after he was convicted of leading a "terrorist group" in northern Egypt's Daqahliya province.

Amer Mossad was slapped with the death penalty for "leading a terrorist group in staging attacks on Muslim Brotherhood opponents in Daqahliya," Egypt's official news agency reported on Monday.

Three others were sentenced to 25 years in prison in the same trial, according to the news agency.

Monday's court ruling is still subject to appeal, a judicial source told Anadolu Agency.

One day earlier, the Egyptian authorities executed six people convicted of joining a "terrorist organization" known as Ansar Beit al-Maqdis.

Active in northern Sinai, the Ansar Beit al-Maqdis militant group changed its name to "Welayet Sinai" ["Province of Sinai"] after reportedly swearing allegiance to Daesh, which last year seized control of vast swathes of territory in both Iraq and Syria.

In recent months, the group has claimed responsibility for several attacks on Egyptian police and army personnel in the restive peninsula.
