Netanyahu assigns Shalom with Palestinian negotiations' file

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Monday assigned his first deputy Silvan Shalom to be responsible for negotiations with the Palestinians and the strategic dialogue with the US, Israeli radio reported.

Shalom will be conducting these tasks in the name of Netanyahu, whose government won the confidence of the parliament, or Knesset, last week.

Tzipi Livni, who was responsible for the negotiations with the Palestinians in the previous government, said she was ready to provide assistance to any minister wishing to reach a settlement.

Israeli-Palestinian negotiations stopped last March because of Tel Aviv's insistence to continue with its settlement expansion and failure to release Palestinian prisoners.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, in a speech marking the Nakba (catastrophe), said the Palestinians would not return to the negotiations' table unless Israel stopped settlements, release prisoners and set a timetable of one year to end the occupation.
